With all the vending machines in Japan, sometimes it seems like the street lamps aren't even needed, as the vending machines light up the road. On smaller streets with no lighting the vending machine casts its illumination along the street.

To the right is an example of a cigarette vending machine at night, complete with a Marlboro ad on the bottom. The most popular brand in Japan appears to be "Mild Seven", with international brands Marlboro and Camel widely available. More interesting names for cigarette brands are "Peace" and "Hope", which you probably need a lot of if you are going to be smoking regularly.
